Margaret Marshall

In 1999, Margaret Marshall became the first woman to serve as Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Marshall wrote the decision for the landmark 2003 case Goodridge v. Department of Public Health, which legalized same-sex marriage in Massachusetts and paved the way for marriage equality nationwide. A native of South Africa and graduate of Yale Law School, Marshall’s varied career has included work as a litigator and as Vice President and General Counsel at Harvard University.
